Our community growing enterprise continues to thrive

November 19, 2023

We’re having to adapt to more extreme weather events

November 5, 2023

As Storm Ciaran raged across Cornwall the safest place for our volunteers and growers was inside the packing shed, out of the wind and rain.

Thankfully our polytunnels stood firm and we avoided serious damage across the veg growing site. We’re all being forced to adapt to more damaging weather extremes from extended drought to fierce wind speeds and intense rainfall.

In all this week’s veg shares:
*pumpkins ‘Jack Be Little’
*garlic
*coriander
*leeks (Mark Norman, Bodmin)
purple sprouting broccoli (Trerair Farm, St Eval)

Eat your Halloween pumpkin and save waste

October 31, 2023

For Halloween this year we’ve grown lots of Jack Be Little pumpkins instead of the giant Jack-o’-Lantern variety. The mini ones look amazing when painted and decorated AND they’re much tastier to eat than carving pumpkins.

However we have also grown just a few Jack o’ Lantern pumpkins for children to carve.

More than 15 million large pumpkins go to waste every year, carved but not eaten, according to the Eat Your Pumpkin campaign from Hubbub. That’s enough for 95 million meals!

In all this week’s veg shares:
*pumpkins ‘Jack Be Little’ or Jack o’ Lantern
*onions
*apples
*carrots or beetroot
*cavolo nero or rhubarb chard
purple sprouting broccoli (Trerair Farm, St Eval)
potatoes ‘Wilja’ (Trerair Farm)

Standard boxes also have:
*beetroot
*Any two out of: cucumber / French beans / tomatoes / chillies / sweet peppers

* = grown to organic principles.  Please wash all veg thoroughly

Growers and volunteers enjoy a break before veg box deliveries begin

October 2, 2023

Crib time for our dedicated picking and packing team every Friday morning provides a very welcome break before we start delivering the veg boxes. It’s always at exactly 11am and this week we all had traditional Cornish saffron cake (from Barnecutt’s in Wadebridge of course!)

We’re getting to that point in the growing season in Cornwall when the summer crops like cucumbers, courgettes and runner beans are gradually coming to an end and we look forward to more brassicas and root vegetables in the boxes.

Meanwhile the tomatoes, peppers and aubergines keep on coming. As usual any surplus green tomatoes will be made into chutney to include in our bumper veg boxes over Christmas.

In all this week’s veg shares:
*tomatoes
*aubergine
*carrots
*green pepper
*onions
*radishes or *French beans or *cucumber or *courgettes
potatoes ‘Picasso’ (Trerair Farm, St Eval)

Standard boxes also have:
*runner beans or *French beans

*courgettes (Mark Norman, Bodmin)
