Volunteers plant extra hedging to protect veg crops and increase biodiversity
February 9, 2022
Our volunteer growers have planted more than 40 metres of native hedging on our site at Treraven Farm and mulched it with a thick layer of woodchip. The extra hedgerows will protect our soil and veg crops from damaging winds while providing food and shelter for a wide variety of wildlife.
The hedging mixture is mainly hawthorn interspersed with plenty of hazel, bird cherry, dog rose, field maple and crab apple. It’ll have a long flowering period to attract pollinators followed by nutritious haws, hips, fruits and nuts.
Big thanks to volunteers Alex, Bryony, Charlotte, Claire, Francesca, Jo, Mark, Susan and Steve.
