Out with the old leeks and in with the new

March 31, 2023

The last of the overwintered leeks have been lifted for the veg boxes just days after the new season’s leek seeds were sown. The ‘hungry gap’ in Cornwall is almost on us when we find ways of bridging the gap between old and new crops.

Growers and volunteers are continuing to sow, prick out and plant as many vegetables as possible. In the polytunnels the broad beans are flowering well alongside carrot seedlings and newly-planted out beetroot, calabrese, peas and turnips.

Outside the early potatoes are all in and some peas, carrots and radishes sown. Lettuce, spinach and kohlrabi will be planted out shortly.

In all the weekly veg boxes:
*radishes
*mixed salad leaves
*coriander
*red Russian kale
purple sprouting broccoli (*Camel CSA / Trerair Farm, St Eval)
cauliflower (Trerair)
potatoes ‘Sagitta’ (Trerair)

Standard boxes also have:
*leeks
*sprouted mung beans
celeriac (Trerair)

* = grown to organic principles.  Please wash all veg thoroughly

Rhubarb’s in season – it must be spring!

March 26, 2023

The rhubarb is ripe and ready for picking. Late winter gales in Cornwall can devastate this valuable early spring crop so we’ve erected an additional windbreak to protect it.

We’re harvesting other new-season vegetables alongside the remaining overwintered crops. Red radishes and purple sprouting broccoli are particular favourites among members of our veg share scheme.

In all the weekly veg boxes:
*rhubarb
*radishes
*mixed salad leaves
*leeks
*red Russian kale
swede (Trerair Farm, St Eval)
potatoes ‘Sagitta’ (Trerair)

Standard boxes also have:
*stirfry mix
*elephant garlic
purple sprouting broccoli (*Camel CSA / Trerair)

* = grown to organic principles.  Please wash all veg thoroughly

These carrots may look whiskery and wonky but we don’t care as they taste delicious! We’re using up the very last of our overwintered root crops during Food Waste Action Week.

Our growers and volunters are getting ready for the new growing season and preparing lots of no-dig outdoor beds for carrot sowing and potato planting. The pepper, tomato, cucumber, aubergine and chillie seeds have germinated in the heated propagator and are being grown on under cover.

In all the weekly veg shares:
*carrots
*parsnips
*beetroot or purple sprouting broccoli
onions (Restharrow Farm, Trebetherick)
spring greens (Trerair Farm, St Eval)
