We’re right in the middle of the ‘hungry gap’ when we’ve eaten almost all last year’s vegetables and eagerly await the spring harvest. Our volunteers and paid growers work so hard to ensure Camel CSA members get a fair share in their veg bags each week, even at this busy time while we sow, plant and nurture the new season’s crops.
In all the weekly veg boxes:
*radishes
*mixed salad leaves
*spring greens
*sprouted mung beans
can of fava beans (Hodmedod’s)
cauliflower (Trerair Farm, St Eval)
potatoes ‘Sagitta’ (Trerair)
Standard boxes also have:
*carrots
*broad bean tops
swede (Trerair)
* = grown to organic principles. Please wash all veg thoroughly
Produce grown by Camel CSA, unless indicated otherwise

The last of the overwintered leeks have been lifted for the veg boxes just days after the new season’s leek seeds were sown. The ‘hungry gap’ in Cornwall is almost on us when we find ways of bridging the gap between old and new crops.
Growers and volunteers are continuing to sow, prick out and plant as many vegetables as possible. In the polytunnels the broad beans are flowering well alongside carrot seedlings and newly-planted out beetroot, calabrese, peas and turnips.
Outside the early potatoes are all in and some peas, carrots and radishes sown. Lettuce, spinach and kohlrabi will be planted out shortly.
In all the weekly veg boxes:
*radishes
*mixed salad leaves
*coriander
*red Russian kale
purple sprouting broccoli (*Camel CSA / Trerair Farm, St Eval)
cauliflower (Trerair)
potatoes ‘Sagitta’ (Trerair)
Standard boxes also have:
*leeks
*sprouted mung beans
celeriac (Trerair)

The rhubarb is ripe and ready for picking. Late winter gales in Cornwall can devastate this valuable early spring crop so we’ve erected an additional windbreak to protect it.
We’re harvesting other new-season vegetables alongside the remaining overwintered crops. Red radishes and purple sprouting broccoli are particular favourites among members of our veg share scheme.
In all the weekly veg boxes:
*rhubarb

Volunteers of all ages worked together to plant the apple trees in our new orchard at Treraven Farm on Saturday.
It’s early days, but we’re so looking forward to putting our own apples in Camel CSA’s veg boxes. We’re planting nearly 40 trees, including traditional Cornish varieties like Pig’s Nose, Tregonna King and Cornish Aromatic.
Last week we held our very first Cornish Wassail to celebrate planting the first fruit tree and to thank our donors for their generosity.
Grateful thanks to all our volunteer tree planters – Alex, Catherine, Charlotte, Claire, Damian, Francesca, Freya, Jack, Jane, Jen, Jo, Jowan, Julie, Kate, Kevin, Marcus, Mark, Nick, Susan + Wadebridge West and St.Mabyn Cornwall Councillor Robin Moorcroft.

The first-ever Wassail held by Camel CSA in north Cornwall is definitely the first of many to come!
We held it to celebrate the first fruit tree planted in our new orchard at Treraven Farm, Wadebridge, and to thank our donors for their generosity.
Wassail King Nick Roberts and accordion player Kevin Everett led Camel CSA volunteers in song, dance and loud noise-making to bless the trees, encourage bountiful harvests and ward off bad spirits.
The 37 trees, mostly apples, include some well-known traditional Cornish varieties like Pig’s Nose, Cornish Aromatic and Tregonna King. Cornwall Councillor Martin Alvey, Cabinet member for environment and climate change, ceremonially planted the very first tree – a Cornish Kea plum.
The trees are funded by Forest for Cornwall while Wadebridge Renewable Energy Network (WREN) has allocated £5,000 for orchard tools and maintenance equipment, donated by Wadebridge-based Clean Earth Energy. Councillor Robin Moorcroft provided a new field gate from his Community Chest.
We’ll be using the orchard to host our annual Wassail and Apple Day events and training workshops to bring people together and share information about the environment, nature and adapting to climate change.
In the past nearly every farm in the Camel Valley maintained a thriving orchard. Most have been lost over the years and we’re proud to be doing our bit to reverse this decline.
It’s a thrill for us to establish a lasting resource that’ll provide apples for the veg boxes and become a fantastic habitat for birds, bees, bats, beetles and butterflies.

Our growers and volunteers have been mending fences and repairing torn polytunnel covers in the wake of Storm Eunice and Storm Franklin. After a nerve-wracking few days we’re fortunate the damage wasn’t much, much worse.
Our hearts go out to growers across the country who’ve suffered extensive damage to crops and infrastructure.

If you sign up for a weekly share of our seasonal veg you get the opportunity to join in Camel CSA’s growing activities. Members Charlotte and Jane volunteered to rearrange the weed-suppressant covers and tidy up the netting ripped off in the wind on our relocation site at Treraven Farm, Wadebridge.
