It could have been worse! Polytunnel doors blown off their hinges, one tunnel flooded, site waterlogged.

Repairing the damage and preparing Camel CSA’s veg boxes on Friday was quite a challenge in the rising wind and torrential rain. A big and grateful thank you to expert growers Bridget and Mark and to this week’s volunteer picking and packing team – Bob, Charlotte, Mike, Penny, Robert, Simon, Toby and Trish.

The ground outside may be saturated, but Camel CSA’s growers have plenty to do in the polytunnels.

Our new pond is a safe refuge for the frogs and toads that eat pests in the polytunnels. Camel CSA’s volunteer growing team landscaped it on a beautiful late autumn day. Many thanks to Adrian (turf lifter extraordinaire) and the rest of the squad – Bob, Bridget, Charlotte, Jane, Mark N, Mike, Simon and Max.

Camel CSA has a glut of tomatoes this year, so we got together for another chutney-making evening. Thanks to Chris for so generously allowing us to make a chaotic, steaming, sticky mess of his kitchen and to the rest of the team – Bridget, Charlotte, Danny, Jane, Penny, Robert and Trish.

We’re harvesting a glut of tomatoes (again) and have lots of ideas for using them up. One traditional favourite is tomato and apple chutney. Any split, unripe or green tomatoes are put into a preserving pan with apples from my old Cornish orchard. The jars will go into Camel CSA’s veg boxes at Christmas.

It feels strange each year when it’s time to harvest summer fruit and plant out winter brassicas.

Camel CSA’s eye-catching new flyers are an original creation by talented Cornish graphic designer Emma Julian of Pickle Design in Wadebridge. The leaflets are designed to promote the new home and workplace delivery service for our veg box scheme members. Doorstep deliveries are every Friday afternoon within a 10-mile radius of our vegetable-growing plot at St Kew Highway near Wadebridge.

It’s almost time to start picking tomatoes. They share a polytunnel with aubergines, sweet peppers and chillies. We’re already harvesting cucumbers, which are growing happily next to coriander, mixed lettuce and rocket. We picked more than 80 cucumbers for last week’s veg boxes, with hundreds more to come.
