Thank goodness! At long last the sun is shining and it’s starting to feel warmer. So far this has been the most difficult start to the growing season for many years. Our lead grower Mark Norman reckons everything is at least three weeks behind schedule.
Normally by this time of year our indoor crops like cucumbers and outdoor ones like early potatoes would be almost ready. Instead we face an extended ‘hungry gap’ with winter crops finished and the bulk of the new season’s plantings not yet ready to harvest.
Our five expert growers and the expanding volunteer growing team have been working tirelessly between the frequent storms and cold downpours to sow, plant, weed and water as they keep up with the busy spring schedule. The weather this year has been dire all over the UK and is simply not on the side of vegetable producers.
In all the veg boxes this week:-
*mixed lettuce leaves
*garlic scapes
*spring greens or *calabrese
*sprouted mung beans
strawberries (Mitchell Fruit Garden)
cauliflower (Trerair Farm, St Eval)
potatoes ‘Wilja’ (Colwith Farm, Lanlivery)
Standard boxes also have:-
*rainbow chard
asparagus (Tregassow Farm, St Erme)
*= grown to organic principles.

We’re now entering the ‘hungry gap’ in Cornwall when last year’s veg crops are almost depleted and the new spring sowings have yet to mature.
While we munch our way through the last of the leeks and the overwintered kale our team of professional growers and volunteers have been working flat out to ensure that we have early maturing spring polytunnel crops like salad leaves, radishes, spring onions, spinach, chard, white turnips, spring cabbage and broad beans.
They’ve also been busy sowing thousands more seeds. The peas are already emerging both indoors and outside, alongside parsley, beetroot, baby turnips, onions and garlic. Carrots and French beans have been sown too as well as early potatoes, kohlrabi, celeriac, cucumber, tomato and aubergine. The list is endless and there’s so much to look forward to.
What’s in all this week’s veg boxes: –
*radish bunch
*red Russian or curly kale
*purple sprouting broccoli
*mixed salad leaves or spinach/chard stir fry mix
*jar of homemade apple chutney
leeks (Trerair Farm, St Eval)
potatoes ‘Wilja’ (Colwith Farm, Lanlivery)
Standard boxes also have:-
*wild garlic leaves – foraged
cauliflower (Trerair)
onions (Rest Harrow Farm, Trebetherick)
*= grown to organic principles.
